I’m Laura Duncan. I am a ceramic artist from Tucson, AZ. I am a total desert girl!
I create hand-built modern mosaics and functional pieces for anyone so that they can turn their memories from places or people into a beautiful piece of art to cherish for a lifetime.
Often we find memories are attached to places or words/phrases. These places and words become a part of us because of the memories that have been created. A memory can be the place you learned how to fish with your grandpa every summer. A memory that is currently being made, like your favorite quote you read each morning to get your day started. It could be a future memory of the new house you and your husband just bought together.
My art also creates functional beauty. I hand build pieces that carry on the spirit of memories but in a piece that you can use every day. For example, a ring dish with the saying “be happy” reminds you every morning to have a positive mindset as you put on your wedding ring from your favorite day. Or a Christmas ornament that you hang on your tree every year to remind you of your first pet. The coasters that sit on your back porch ready to hold your cold drink to kick off the weekend after a long week.
I take your memories, past, present, or future, and turn them into a mosaic/plaque or functional piece that you can have for a lifetime. I use natural brown clays, neutral colors, and play with textures to portray the feeling you get while you visit these places or live these words.
For me, I find the connection and the feeling of home with the desert. Most of my work has either textures, colors, or images of the desert. The desert is where my memories are and it is my home. But I love to explore other parts of nature as well. I often find inspiration in florals and plants.
